A #GREATWayTo Colour

How colouring helps our Data and Impact Analyst, Muriel.

My name is Muriel, and I’m the Data & Impact Analyst at the GREAT Project. That means I collect data about the project performance against targets but also to give a measure of our success to the various people we work with. Strange as it may seem to some, I actually love my job and I love the project.

But for the past 3 weeks I’ve not been working. Me and the dreaded COVID-19 have been having a bit of a hard time together, at least as far as I know it was COVID-19. So data analysis has been put on hold for now and I’ve had to find strategies to cope with this situation entirely on my own.

My favourite passtime, and the only one I could cope with for a while, was to take colouring pencils and pens and colour the beautiful images from The Mindfulness Colouring Book – Anti-stress art therapy for busy people by Emma Farrarons. I picked it up in a charity shop for a quid, a couple of weeks before lock down. Little did I know it would provide me with such peace and enjoyment…I love art, but I’m not an artist, and I can’t draw. So this is an ideal simple way for me to make beautiful images simply by carefully filling the spaces with colours. It’s perfect for me as all my colleagues will tell you, I’m a colourful girl! The idea is to immerse yourself into the task, putting some nice music on, maybe burn a scented candle, and let your mind be carried away by the image… all your stress melt away.

Now I’m getting a bit better, I’m managing to come back to my yoga mat. I have followed a YouTube channel called Yoga With Adrienne for at least 4 years now. I love it as Adrienne gives simple, clear instructions at the same time allowing you to deepen your practice, little by little. When I was ill I couldn’t even do 10mins of yoga. So I started gently, with a practice called ‘Vulnerability’, especially recorded a few days ago for this strange time we’re in. I promise you, the first time I did it, I cried a lot… but now each time gets easier and now I smile and feel soooo good afterwards. Here you can see again, colourful me!

I hope you’re managing to stay safe, stay well, while staying at home. I recommend yoga at home any time, and mindful colouring. It picks you up when you’re down and relaxes you when you’re high!

Take care everyone!
